How to Prevent Split Ends

At some point, we’ve all had split ends. No matter what your hair texture, split ends are sometimes inevitable. Whether it be from extreme weather conditions or hair styling techniques such as blowdrying or heat styling, their hair becomes dry, brittle, and frayed at the end. The split ends almost look like the end of an unraveled rope. If you are struggling with split ends, the good news is that there are ways to mask them and still have your hair looking its best. Getting frequent haircuts and using the right products will allow you to still have great hair days! However, if you want to prevent the problem from happening in the first place, we have some to help you keep your hair strong and healthy, and free of split ends.

Don’t Over-Shampoo

It’s important to be mindful about how frequently you’re washing your hair, and how much shampoo you’re using. When the hair is wet, it’s in it’s most fragile state, so constantly washing your hair is causing more wear and tear. If you can wait a few days in between washes, do so. Dry shampoo is your friend! When you do shampoo, avoid using too much product. A good rule of thumb is to tie your hair back into a ponytail, and whatever the diameter of your pony is, is about how much shampoo you should use. When you brush your hair wet, be sure to use a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush that is easy on your hair.

Reduce the Shower Temperature

When you do wash your hair, you also want to avoid using overly hot water. Although the hot water feels good on your skin, especially in the winter, the hot water can actually cause damage to your hair. It makes the cuticles swell, which makes them more prone to split ends. Try using lukewarm water or as cold water as you can stand, as the cold will help to seal the outer layer of the hair, especially when doing a final rinse.

Use a MicroFiber Towel

When you get out of the shower, instead of towel drying your hair with your regular towel, try wrapping your head in a microfiber towel. They are more gentle on your hair and will help to absorb the excess moisture.

Choose Hair Accessories Wisely

If you’re going to rock an up-do, whether it be a ponytail, bun, or braid, avoid using accessories that could be harmful to your hair, such as metal ones. Hair elastics with metal can snag and cause breakage in your hair. Scrunchies and no-damage hair ties are your best choice.

Don’t Pick and Pull

If you do have a few split ends, resist the urge to pick and pull them apart, as you’ll only make matters worse. This just leaves room for more split ends to form.

Get Regular Hair Trims

Instead of picking your split ends, it’s time to pay your stylist a visit! Getting frequent trims will keep your hair healthy and free of split ends, even if you’re trying to grow your hair out. The longer you wait between trims, the higher up on your hair shaft the ends will split. It’s recommended to get a trim every 6-8 weeks to maintain healthy locks!
