How Often Do I Need a Haircut?

While some people long for a day at the salon, craving that relaxed and refreshed feeling, or love trying out a new style, for others it’s simply to keep their hair healthy. For that reason, one of the most commonly asked questions at any salon, is how often do I really need to get my hair cut? Although generic answers may tell you about 6-8 weeks, it’ll depend on several factors, and isn’t necessarily a “one size fits all” answer. Keep reading to learn more about why cutting your hair frequently is important, and how often you’ll need haircuts based on your hair type!

Why Do You Need to Cut Your Hair?

The longer you go between haircuts, the greater the risk that your deadends will prevent the rest of your hair from growing. Even if you’re trying to grow your hair out longer, frequently trimming your hair is crucial to remove your split ends. Split ends that are left untouched have the ability to travel up your hair and break it off even higher, which will leave your hair even shorter than before. Staying on top of these split ends will help to maintain length, and even promote growth if this is your goal!

In addition to the split ends, your hair will start to lose its natural texture between cuts. When the ends become weak, they don’t hold their natural shape properly. If you have curly hair, for example, you’ll notice that your curls may start to lose their bounce and fullness when you’ve gone too long without a haircut. Trimming those ends will bring back its natural properties!

Haircut Frequency By Length:

Although there’s no perfect answer to how often you’ll need a haircut, breaking it down by hair length will give you a better idea:

Short Hair:

Typically, short hair will need to be cut most frequently, especially if you want to keep the style looking fresh. Hair grows about ½ inch every 4 weeks, depending on the person. Therefore, it’d be safe to say that short hair will need a trimming every 4-8 weeks to keep its shape!

Medium Length Hair:

Depending upon whether you’re trying to maintain or grow out your medium length hair, it’d be recommended to cut your hair somewhere between 6-12 weeks. If you’re trying to maintain, 6-8 weeks will be your best bet. If you want to grow your hair out, aim for a trim every 8-12 weeks instead.

Long Hair:

If you have long hair, it can be easier to fall into the trap of letting months and months go by without getting a trim, because you’re happy with the length of your long luscious lock! However, consistent haircuts are still crucial to keep it healthy. Long hair is usually more susceptible to breakage, which makes the ends appear thinner. Haircuts every 8-12 weeks will keep it happy, healthy and full!
